Conservation of Our Home
We are abusing OUR Planet, OUR Home.
We hear news reports of violent storms and natural disasters and the reporters refer to the violence and destructive power of "Mother Nature".
IT'S NO LONGER "Mother Nature"! We have destroyed the environment to the point where the global weather is no longer "Mother Nature", but, is our creation, a distorted unnatural environment.
We have removed 80% to 90% of the forests in North America and 70% of the wetlands. The trees that we've removed used CO2, a greenhouse gas, and released O2, the oxygen we breath. The wetlands purified our water and helped to maintain the water table.
Do we really understand why "global warming" and "lack of water" are serious problems in North America and the world.
We spread insecticides and chemicals to control mosquitos and other insect pests and in the process contaminate our land and water. Very few of us acknowledge that we have destroyed our songbird habitat (forests and wetlands) and reduced their populations by 70% or more. Many of those birds ate the insects we are trying to kill. One example, the bluebird, was reduced to only 10% of its original population. The bluebird is slowly coming back, thanks to many hard working conservationists and birders.
